St
Canice's v Gowran March 24th
New Year begins Well
In our first outing in the new A/B format of the county
league, we travelled to Gowran and scored a convincing
win over the locals. We were much bigger and stronger
than the opposition. We also showed some nice hurling
skills. We will without doubt meet tougher opponents
shortly!
Our team was:
Sam Johnson
Eoin Predergast Caimin Brown J.J.Hickey
Conor Maharaj David Glynn Ciaran Gough
Michael Hayes Colm McPartlan
Andrew Cantwell David Gaule Evan Guilfoyle
Cian Tynan Cillian Buckley Evan Walsh
Sub: Peter Vickery
St
Canice's v Kilmanagh
Roinn A round 2
March 31
Jame's Park
V Kilmanagh
After
games of 7 aside hurling and football the previous two
evenings, our hurlers turned in a fine performance to
outscore Kilmanagh by 3-12 to 0-3 on a beautiful March
day. Playing against the breeze in the first half, we
led 0-7 to 0- 2 at half time, and continued in the same
spirit in the second half. On a day we were without
the injured Evan Guilfoyle and David Gaule, and Peter
Vickery who was ill, we added both Shane Clohosey and
Aidan Nolan to our panel. Both players showed that they
have the skill to perform at this level.
While we were not under huge pressure most of the time,
the 'management' was pleased with our performance, knowing
that an improvement will be necessary when the season
is nearing an end. The eyecatchers in today's win were
C McPartlan, JJ Hickey, C Gough, T Hayes, C Brown, C
Tynan, A Cantwell and C Buckley.
St
Canice's Game 3
Tuesday 20/04/04
Roinn A/B
Venue Coote's Lane
Result: St. Canice's 6-3 St. Patrick's 1-3
Our
third game in this competition saw us deliver another
sound performance. We started well and had four goals
scored before St. Pat's really got into the game. After
our initial scoring blitz, the play was much more even.
Without doubt, the St. Pats lads would like another
chance to play us again - they'd hardly be so generous
again in early play.
Most players played well. Special mention today to Sam
Johnson, Eoin Pendergast, Colm McPartlan, Ciarán
Gough (best game yet?) Michael Hayes, Caimin Brown,
David Gaule, Evan Guilfoyle.
Aidan Nolan , Peter Vickery and Shane Clohosey all did
well when introduced.
St
Canice's v Clara
May 11th 2004
In Clara
Roinn A/B Match 5
Clara 5-6 St. Canice's 3-10
What
a game! What a fantastic game! We lost on the scoreboard
when Patrick Galvin scored a goal with the last puck
of the game, but in this game there were no losers.
There was no exaggeration when Richie Mulrooney said
in our dressing room after the game that this was the
best game of school's hurling that he had ever witnessed.
It is hard to believe that boys ranging from 10 to 13
years of age could provide such a demonstration of skill,
speed, courage, commitment and any other quality associated
with sport at the top level. The most evident quality
of all was sportmanship. Not once was there a hint of
lost tempers or unfair play. These boys played the game
as it should be played.
A draw would have been a perfect result. Throughout
the game the lead changed many times. As the score suggests,
Clara had the upper hand when it came to scoring goals,
but we matched them well in all sectors of the field.
Conor Maharaj had a fantastic game in goal, standing
in for the holiday-maker, Sam Johnson. Our full back
line of Eoin Pender, Colm McPartlan and J.J.Hickey were
under more pressure in this game that they have been
in a long while and each one of them showed great defensive
skills.
David Glynn was a giant at centre back. His battle with
Patrick Galvin was brilliant to watch- both players
are tough, skillful and brave - someday soon they will
surely play on the same team wearing black and amber
stripes.
Evan Walsh showed up well again in his second game at
wing back while on the other wing Aidan Nolan did well
when deputising for Ciaran Gough.
Our midfielders put in their usual hard working performance.
Caimin Brown continues to improve each day and was well
in contention for man-of-the-match. Michael Hayes never
gives up!!
David Gaule led the attack with power and improved skill
as was demonstrated with a fantastic point scored on
the run with his weak hand in the first half. Andrew
Cantwell and Cillian Buckley had the Clara backs in
trouble throughout. The inside line was Peter Vickery,
Cian Tynan and Evan Guilfoyle. These three are class
hurlers and all played well. Shane Clohosey came on
towards the end but little ball came his way so he could
not show his style.
These teams are most likely to meet again. Wouldn't
it be great if that meeting happened to be in Nowlan
Park in the Roinn A final? However, there are two more
league matches to play before we get to knock out stages,
so lets not start counting any chickens yet!
About thirty adults were present in Clara today. No
doubt every one of them will remember this game for
a long time.
St
Canice's v Kilmacow March 26th
Away to Kilmacow
In
spite of great individual performances, many from 'rookies'
playing their first matches in a St. Canice's jersey,
our first outing of the year in the C/D league ended
in a heavy defeat at the hands of Kilmacow.
Our defenders were under heavy pressure from the start.
Each one of them performed admirably, but special mention
to the youngest, Rory Glynn. He was great. David McGeary
in goal could not be faulted for any of their scores.
Further up the field we found it hard to make progress
in the early stages, but as the game developed, we improved.
The pick of our hurlers in this section was the skilful
Shane Clohosey, Michael Casey, James Murphy, Ivor O
Brien and Alex Quinlan.
This was a learning experience for most of our novices
and we expect to see a gradual improvement in the coming
weeks, beginning with our next match, home to Glenmore
next week.

St
Canice's v Dunnamaggin April 21st
Not good enough in Dunnamaggin
A
disappointing first half performance put paid to our
chances of winning this, our third game in the Roinn
C/D hurling league, played in Dunammaggin on a fine
April evening. We trailed by 5-1 to 0-1(Darragh Buggy
free) at half time, and only when we introduced our
subs did we begin to play with the spirit we displayed
in our previous outings.
The final scoreline of 6-2 to 3-1 shows that our subs
had the desired effect when introduced- special mention
here to Mason Clifford, James Murphy(1-0), Kieran Ormond
and Brian Howe.
Not enough of our starters played to their full potential.
There were, nonetheless, very good displays from Thomas
Phelan, Peter Turley, Rory Glynn, Michael Casey and
Eoin Cantwell(2-0).
We are still waiting for our first victory in this competition.
We must remember we had a slow start last year also
and finished the year as Roinn D champions! We look
forward to an improved display in our next match.
St
Canice's v Windgap
May 11th 2004
Roinn C/D
Match 4
In Palmerstown
Windgap 6-1 St. Canice's 2-1
Another
game, another loss.
However, there are definite signs there that our youngsters
are improving. Indeed, in an odd way, this was a game
that could have been won. We failed to convert some
good early chances and paid the penalty when Windgap
scored three gaols in their first three attacks.
Next week's game will be very tough for us against a
strong Callan team. At this stage it looks like a certainty
that we will play in the Roinn D for the knock out part
of the championship. Here we will meet teams that we
have a realistic chance of beating, so we look forward
to June hurling
