School

St Canice's Co-Ed N.S. was founded in 1981. 3 schools in the area amalgated- St Canice's Infant School, St Canice's Boys' School and the Loreto Junior School. Mr Liam Moloney who was Principal of the Boys' school became Principal of St Canice's Co-Ed. From small beginnings the school has grown to its present size of 29 teachers and 8 Special Needs Assistants. Ms Maria Comerford is the present Principal.

St Canice's School promotes the whole well being of the child. It has an excellent reputation for the academics and provides a wide range of extra-curricular activities.

There is an extensive instrumental music programme in the school. Every child who wishes to learn a musical instument is facilitated.The programme starts in Junior Infants and continues throughout the school. The school boasts three full orchestras. The A Orchestra has won the Feis Ceoil competition for orchestras on numerous occasions. The school gives an orchestral concert in the local Watergate Theatre on a biannual basis.

There is also a strong tradition of choral singing in the school. The school is host to the Kilkenny Region of the National Children's Choir and has been a member of that choir since 1987. Every child in fifth and sixth class sings in concert in St Canice's Cathedral every two years. A number of these children go to sing in the National Concert Hall in Dublin backed by a professional orchestra. The school choir has won the Kilkenny Festival for school choirs and has participated in Slogadh.

Hurling, camogie, football and basketball are played extensively in the school. Every day at dinnertime hurling and camogie leagues are played in the adjoining St James' Park. The school boys' hurling and football teams won Roinn A of their Leagues last year. The Girls' teams also won out the camogie and ladies' football Leagues last year. Basketball leagues for fifth and sixth classes take place during the first break. The school basketball team plays against other schools in the city.
